Conventional Fire Alarms - This type of fire alarm uses different
numbered
“zones” that are then hardwired to your main central control panel.
These
systems allow for separate fire alarms to be installed in each section
of
your building and can monitor their status.
Addressable Fire Alarms – Also known as “intelligent systems,” addressable
fire alarms monitor all of the fire alarms in your building while also allowing
you to choose between manual or automatic settings. Each of the alarms installed
in these systems has its own unique address, which can help you see the status
of each alarm and if there are any issues. These systems may be more expensive,
but their monitoring features are very helpful.
We proudly service and install fire alarm
brands
such as Siemens, Notifier, GST, Honeywell, System sensor, Apollo and
Agni.
A FIRE ESCAPE PLAN?
Every person should know exactly where and what to do in the event of a
fire. There should be no questions left unanswered. No one should think,
“Where do we meet if there’s a fire?” or “How do I get out of my office
if
the hall is in flames?”. There should be answers to these hypothetical
situations and peace in the mind of employees. That is why it is
important
for businesses to have a fire action plan in case one breaks out an your
office or place of employment.
Classification
Fire extinguishers are classified by the type of fire that they will
extinguish:
A Class A fire extinguisher is used for
ordinary combustibles, such as wood, paper, some plastics, and textiles.
This class of fire requires the heat-absorbing effects of water or the
coating effects of certain dry chemicals. Extinguishers that are
suitable
for Class A fires should be identified by a triangle containing the
letter
"A."
A Class B fire extinguisher is used for
flammable liquid and gas fires such as oil, gasoline, etc. These fire
extinguishers deprive the fire of oxygen and interrupt the fire chain by
inhibiting the release of combustible vapors. Extinguishers that are
suitable for Class B fires should be identified by a square containing
the
letter "B."
A Class C fire extinguisher is used on
fires that involve live electrical equipment, which require the use of
electrically nonconductive extinguishing agents. (Once the electrical
equipment is de-energized, extinguishers for Class A or B fires may be
used.) Extinguishers that are suitable for Class C fires should be
identified by a circle containing the letter "C."
A Class D fire extinguisher is used on
combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, sodium, etc., which
require
an extinguishing medium that does not react with the burning metal.
Extinguishers that are suitable for Class D fires should be identified
by a
five-point star containing the letter "D."
A Class K fire extinguisher is used on
fires involving cooking media (fats, grease, and oils) in commercial
cooking
sites such as restaurants. These fire extinguishers work on the
principle of
saponification. Saponification takes place when alkaline mixtures, such
as
potassium acetate, potassium citrate, or potassium carbonate, are
applied to
burning cooking oil or fat. The alkaline mixture combined with the fatty
acid creates a soapy foam on the surface that holds in the vapors and
steam
and extinguishes the fire. These extinguishers are identified by the
letter
K.

A fire suppression system will have built-in components to detect fires as early as possible. These components will first identify the presence of flames and smoke. The suppression system will then initiate an alarm, so the blaze can be subdued before it has the chance to spread. A fire suppression system can be considered an ‘active’ fire protection method because the system is triggered in response to the presence of fire. As will be explored further in this article, a fire suppression system also contains a range of components that ‘actively’ work to extinguish flames and smoke.
